More Pictures

Here are some more pictures of Belfast and its well-known 'peace lines'. Those are physical barriers, often walls and link fences, that seperate neighbourhoods from one another. Their purpose is a defensive one, to provide a defence for houses on either side from objects being thrown by rioters. The following pics are from the peace line surrounding the Short Strand/Cluan Place neighbourhood, in East Belfast. Short Strand is a Catholic enclave of about 4000 residents nestled in East Belfast, a predomentantly Protestant sector of Belfast. As one can imagine from these images, a lot goes on here, and just a few days ago this area was no stranger to the recent riots. The picture below shows a gate through the peace line, which is almost always closed.
This picture shows how high the peace line goes- about 10 meters! It also has a very craggy looking barrier in the middle.

The picture above is a mural in a Protestant estate that symbolises a rememberance for past attacks commited by Republicans.
